After three+ weeks of the illness cycling through my family Leif and I were at our wits end. I finally decided to buckle down and figure out how to fight this with the knowledge that I've gained through my holistic health studies. Why I let it go on so long before doing this I have no idea! But I did finally come up with 2 Very Simple remedies and I truly believe they helped my boys finally sleep without vomiting or Diarrhea.

FIRST:
I mixed 2 Tablespoons of Pure Honey with 1 teaspoon high quality Cinnamon. I was thrilled to see that my boys licked this off of a (baby sized) spoon like it was a lolly pop. I just needed to be sure to wipe their little mouths so the cinnamon didn't irritate their skin. But they didn't let that little irritation stop them from sucking this down several times a day. I really believe it helped!
Here's why I used these two ingredients:
Cinnamon is one of the world's most widely used digestive aids, helping to improve most gastrointestinal problems. It is greatly effective in relieving intestinal gas and eases diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. It also contains propanoic acid, which helps to stop the formation of stomach ulcers without interfering in the production of the gastric acid needed for good digestion. Germany's Commission E approves Cinnamon for loss of appetite and indigestion.
Cinnamon is now on the list of antivirals. An Israeli researcher has demonstrated that a Cinnamon extract has been able to quickly and effectively immunize fowl against Newcastle disease virus, and further studies on Avian Flu H9, HIV virus and herpes simplex-1 also achieved positive results. Furthermore, Cinnamon extract may also be useful in combating the deadly Bird Flu H5.
Honey: In treating diarrhea, honey promotes the rehydration of the body and more quickly clears up the diarrhea and any vomiting and stomach upsets. The anti-bacterial properties of honey, both the peroxide and non-peroxide, are effective in the laboratory against MRSA strains of bacteria which are notoriously resistant to antibiotics and are sometimes responsible for the closing of hospital wards.

SECOND:
I monitored and planned their food. My boys were fine during the day so they would eat. But their stomach wasn't breaking the food down fast enough and it would all come up at night when they slept. So this is how we ate:
Breakfast: We had a regular breakfast (cereal, toast, yogurt, etc.)
Snacks: Juices, cinnamon toast, bananas or applesauce (no snacks after 3:00PM)
Lunch: For lunch we ate oatmeal (quick oats) with a lot of cinnamon. We used soy milk to limit dairy. Oatmeal could cause problems for some. You could make hot cereal with brown rice (google it for a recipe or purchase it at the store.)
Dinner: This is the most important meal to monitor! You want it to be light and smooth. No chunks! I made a chicken broth soup with boiled potatoes. I added a Butternut squash pasta sauce as a base. It still wasn't quite thick enough so I drained some of the juice out of a can of southwestern chicken veggie soup and added the contents into the pot. After bringing it to a boil I poured it into my Vitamix and blended it until smooth. It was very tastey but we ended up wanting to drink it.;) This was the perfect meal to ease the stomachs. It had a touch of garlic and a touch of cayenne both have soothing and healing properties. The next night we had leftover soup, mashed potatoes, and bananas dipped in cool whip.

GOOD LUCK!

Healthy Habits Contest!

My sister in Law Heidi has put together a great contest to help us all feel more healthy for the new year. I want to invite anyone else who wants to join us! Let Me Know!!

Here are the Rules (Written by Heidi):

1. By the end of tomorrow (Dec 6) everyone will email me (HeidiBoydPotter at GMail.com) back with your BMI (Body Mass Index). If you go HERE It will ask you a couple questions and calculate it for you. I think it is better to go off of this number, rather than actual pounds lost. As we are all different sizes and have different goals :) I will keep a record, so that you don't have to announce it to the whole group, and I'll keep track of everyones, so that we know who the winner is at the end.

2. By the end of tomorrow (Dec 6) everyone will email me (HeidiBoydPotter at GMail.com) back with your goals. For example, Mine are... I would like to lose 20 pounds, Exercise 6 days a week for a minimum of 30 mins and wake up before 6 am every morning and go and read motivating material with my hubby :) Your goals can be whatever you wish. I'm just simply making you write them down and say them to somebody. Ya' welcome :)

3. EVERY monday, you must respond to the weekly email that I send. You will respond with your updated BMI, and how your goals are going for you, and, if you wish, any recipe ideas, and/or tips you learned the previous week that you would like to share! But, I AT LEAST need a quick check in email with your BMI.

4. As far as what you eat. This is not too strict, However, if you wanna win, you will do whatever it takes. I suggest going off of soda completely. Narrow your sugar intake way down and eat less carbs and more proteins and grains. You can use www.weightwatchers.com for healthy recipe ideas. Try to avoid going out to eat as much as possible during this time. Plan ahead. Make lunches for yourself the night before. If you do go out to eat, on the weekend, than CHOOSE WISELY. For example, ask for no mayo or extra sauces on sandwiches. Choose a salad with a light dressing. AVOID YELLOW CHEESE!! It's no good. Just trust me. Think about switching to Almond milk. There is better health benefits than regular milk. Eat Greek yogurt, instead of regular..Eat lots of veggies and fruit.

5. If you miss reporting on 2 emails. You are DISQUALIFIED. So don't do that. If you had a bad week, report anyway. We are all going to have bad weeks, let's be honest, it's the holidays. SO, just report, and keep going. It will be worth it.

6. You will take a picture of yourself every week and hang it up on your bathroom mirror to see each week. (this is the part I dread)

7. Every morning, you will wake up and say OUT LOUD one of these two options " I am Alive. I am Alert. I feel GREAT! " or "I am Happy. I am Healthy. I am TERRIFIC!" and no... I'm not kidding. You WILL do this. If you feel so inclined, you will also repeat these thoughts to yourself as you go to bed at night.

GREAT! Now, here is the PRIZE idea I have..

* Everyone, besides the winner, will put $25 towards buying the winner a gift, and if necessary, mailing it to that person if it cannot be delivered by you. Think of how fun it will be to be the winner and receive 8 thoughtful gifts in the mail. I know right ???!! Oh, and PS don't send a restaurant gift card, it needs to be an actual present. Be creative :)

THE Competition Begins NOW and ends March 5. One of the assignments is to use several different modalities for Stress Management and choose which work best for you. I have found that Audio Meditation and Positive Affirmations have really worked for me. I turned on some healing tunes on Pandora while I was getting my kids ready for bed tonight. I told my son to lay on the couch and listen to the song. I then helped him visualize floating through outer space. He LOVED it!! He begged me to find him a real meditation and let him listen to it after the little boys went to bed. I found a GREAT website that offers free Audio Guided Meditation. It's called Fragrant Heart.com My son and I listened to the Meditation for Children. It was great! I'm going to listen to one for me tonight. I love when I find just what I'm looking for right when I need it!! Everything from colon cleansers, herbs, and homeopathic drops, to flower essence and a huge box of raw food meals. Occasionally I find something that really works. In fact it works so well that I share the success with others. Well, I found something! I found doTerra Essential Oils. They take an extra step in the purification process and their oils are so pure that some of them can actually be ingested. I have compared doTerra to my other oils and the difference is clearly noticeable.

So far (within one month of having the doTerra oils I have seen positive results within the day of use from various oils for:

Vaginal/Urinary Tract Infection
Cold sores
Canker sores
Sunburn
Blisters
Sore Muscles
Earache
Sinus pain and pressure
Hyper children (Lavender)
Anti-viral
Chest congestion
Upset stomach
Smelly vacuum (Citrus Bliss)

So far these are my favorite doTerra Oils and Oil Blends:

And I look forward to using these oils in the near future:

I purchased fractionated coconut oil with my oil and it is wonderful! There's not really a drawn out answer to this question. What it boils down to is I signed up for Community College courses (along with my GCNM program) and when I accepted the Financial Aid offered for the Community College classes I accepted more then what I needed for that tuition and used the extra to pay for my GCNM education.

What Will I Do With My Holistic Health Practitioners Credentials

Several of my readers have asked me what I will do with my GCNM Holistic Health Practitioners credentials. I thought I'd take a minute to answer their question.

When I began the GCNM program in August 2008 (2+ years ago) I had many ideas of how I would practice Holistic Medicine. My main goal was to finish within a year and open up a Holistic Health Consultation Practice. Well, as we all know, very rarely does life goes as we plan it. This is no longer my goal. Why, you ask?

My life and view of Holistic Medicine has changed dramatically since I began my course. I still have yet to finish. I hope that GCNM will still award my efforts when I do finish even though it has taken me so long. I have three little boys now who take my full attention. And I am still on a personal mission to heal Myself. I have been chronically ill since 2006. Therefore, my research has become more of a gigantic trial and error type case study, with myself as well as my children being the main participants of the study. I have come a long way, but I feel I probably have a long way to go.

I have learned a very valuable lesson. Not one that I like, but one that I have come to accept.
One of the most frustrating truths about becoming a Holistic Health Practitioner is that 90% of the people whom you want to give suggestions to, to help them help themselves, will never follow through with your recommendations. Our clients have to want the advise. They have to be ready to make the changes, no matter what the suggestions. They have to be ready to trust outside of the box. From my experience it is the people who come to you for help that are ready. Perhaps this is one of the main reasons why I enjoy blogging. I can share my knowledge and experience, people can come to me, and they can choose to take it or leave it and my heart is spared the ache of watching those in need go away from the help they need without accepting it. As well as blogging, perhaps I should consider my home and family my current Holistic Health Clinic and Practice? That sounds about right.

And finally, my view of natural medicine has evolved and changed over the years. I have said this before, I personally should have taken the Nutritionist Program. Personally, I have found that at this point I only use herbs on occasion. My main focus has become on lifestyle, diet, and nutritional supplementation. I also have a respect for Western Medicine being used in its place along side Holistic Medicine. Similar to what Dr. Wiel calls Integrated Medicine. As you study with GCNM you will find that they are strongly bias to Alternative Medicine and quite close to Anti-Western Medicine. I do not agree with their philosophy in this regard. It is important to find a good balance and not fall too deeply into the traps of conspiracy theory's and wild or unfounded opinions. Find a balance and strive to maintain it within you practice. Don't rely too heavily on one way of thinking and remember to look at the whole picture of things before making a final conclusion.

So, this is what I am doing with my knowledge and experiences that have stemmed partly from GCNM. Sharing with anyone and everyone who is willing and ready to listen. I pray that I may be an instrument of change and well-being in at least one person's life every day.

What Is Leaky Gut? - Andrew Weil, MD

What Is Leaky Gut? - Andrew Weil, MD

While researching Gluten Intolerance I have often come upon the term "Leaky Gut Syndrome." This is actually due to the fact that I have been very ill. I have always been chronically ill, but ever since my last baby was born 6 months ago I have steadily declined instead of improved.

This of course led me into a researching frenzy. Thanks to a random suggestion from my mother (clearly heaven sent) I was reminded of the condition known as Celiac Disease. Up to this point I only knew of Celiac Disease as a disease that causes severe digestive problems. But it didn't take too long to find that there were many many more symptoms to Celiac Disease. And for the first time in my life there was a condition that listed all of my strange symptoms all in one place. I was over joyed! Just to have the possibility of finding an answer...

Well, the blood tests for Celiac came back negative. I was disappointed. But I had a nagging feeling that this was still the answer. So I tried the gluten free diet. And it worked!! I will be tested for gluten and wheat intolerance so I can not be 100% gluten free 24/7. But I feel so much better. You can follow my family's journey back to health on my blog: Mama's Gettin' Us Healthy.

I finally have enough energy and brain power to finish my GCNM studies!! As you can see from the image above, I give GCNM a Three Star rating out of Five. Let's see if I can give a good explanation about the reasons I am giving it a three rather than a five. I'll share with you some of the positives along with the negatives.

I have used several of the books that they provide for the HHP program. Especially The Optimum Nutrition Bible, Alternative Medicine The Definitive Guide, and A-Z Guide to Drug-Herb-Vitamin Interactions. As well as the Dr. Weil Seminars. However, I rarely refer to the Text Modules provided by GCNM. I think this is because they are very bias towards the personal agenda and opinions of GCNM. And personally my opinions differ in several ways. They seem to be very against Western Medicine in general. I believe there is a place for both Holistic Health and Western Medicine. It's finding the balance that is the trick. I feel that this is one of our missions as HHP, to help people find a good balance for their needs.

I also realized in the middle of my studies that I probably would have enjoyed the Nutritionist program rather then the Holistic Health Practitioners program. I tend to lean towards healing through quality nutrition rather then through herbs and alternative therapies as my first line of defense. If I did want to focus on herbs and alternative therapy, GCNM's HHP program does NOT meet the needs I would have in order to truly use and create herbal remedies on my own or practice any of the alternative therapies such as hair, tongue, and nail analysis. When I have wanted to create remedies, or wanted to analyze finger nails, I have had to turn to the Internet to teach me the process and for photos. GCNM's text greatly lacks detail in HOW to combine herbs properly. They teach which herbs are synergistic together. But there is not enough detail on literal measurements and technicalities of this process. Even with the book The Herbal Medicine-Makers Handbook I still feel unprepared to really use herbs efficiently. In my opinion I spent WAY too much money for how much I have had to refer to the Internet throughout my studies.

I have used GCNM's text and teachings as a guideline or an outline for my studies. The true learning has been through hours and hours... and hours, of research on certain subjects. Also, through trial and error. In one way I have a unique perspective. I have been able to use my personal health (good, bad, and ugly) as my guinea pig and research agenda. I won't go into detail, lets just say that I am familiar with many physical ailments on a personal level. But I'm getting off of the subject. My point is that I feel that GCNM has only been a small part of my study agenda. Although, they have given me resources that I otherwise would not have had.

I will wrap this review up with this, GCNM provides quality education. Is it THE BEST? Probably not. But I honestly wouldn't know, because I haven't tried the other options out there. Has it been worth it for me? Like I said in the beginning I give it a Three Star Rating out of Five.

GCNM Book Report

I finally sat myself down and typed out my Book Report. I'm glad it's done.

I chose a book titled, Optimum Nutrition for Your Child's Mind written by Patrick Holford and Deborah Colson. The book was a good read. It was a short review of Holford's Optimum Nutrition Bible. But I chose it because I wanted some insight into nutrition for children in particular. It was worth my time.

So that's where I'm at. I need to finish the case studies, write my thesis, finish the coloring book, and make my Herbal remedy. This may be the case when it comes to the date. However, I wish I could say I was closer to complete when it comes to the course work. I've completed all of my workbooks and the quizzes. I've completed all of the in person Case Studies. I've read the things that are required. I have listened to the Dr. Weil Seminars twice. And I have posted several Forum Responses. Now that I write it down, it looks like I may be doing better then I feel like I am doing.

Now I'll list those things that I still need to complete. Technically I have about three more months until I need to have everything wrapped up and sent in. I have half of the Anatomy Coloring finished. This is one of the most monotonous and time consuming parts of the course work. It does give a good picture of the anatomy. But I can't promise I'll remember very much of it. I'm in the middle of writing down the answers for the Dr. Weil Seminars. I can't believe I didn't fill in the answers as I listened to it the previous TWO times I listened to them. I have the book report to complete. The Thesis. Case Studies to complete. The Final Exam. And the Herbal Remedy to make. Luckily I have an idea of what I am hoping to make. I plan on writing about the Course Book titled The New Optimum Nutrition Bible by Patrick Holford. This has been the most useful book by far that I have from these studies.

So how am feeling about my experience with GCNM (Global College of Natural Medicine)? I think on a scale from 1-10, 1 being "I want my money back!" and 10 being "OUTSTANDING" I give it a 5. I have certainly learned a lot. However, I believe that the course work was only a small foundation for what I have learned. I have done a lot of personal research outside of my coursework as well. So overall I feel prepared to answer questions and give advise. The one section that I feel is sorely lacking in the Holistic Health Practitioner course is more information on exactly HOW to make different Herbal Remedies. They give information. But I think more is required to help us understand the details of it all more clearly.

On a personal note, I realized half way through my studies that I probably would have been happy with the Nutritionist Course rather then the Holistic Health Practitioner course. I find that I am not as likely to use herbs as I am to advise someone to use quality vitamins and Omega 3s. But in the end I'm sure I won't regret the studies.

Forum Topic: PUPPP (Pregnancy Itch)

I know what PUPPP feels like from first hand experience. Before I go further, I wanted to break down the crazy name that it has been given: Pruritic (severe itching) urticarial (hives) papules (a circumscribed, solid elevation of skin with no visible fluid) and plaques (a flat, often raised patch on the skin) of pregnancy (PUPPP). It would seem that PUPPP is an allergic reaction, or an excess of histamine in the body. Histamine dilates blood vessels and makes the vessel walls abnormally permeable. What is it that is permeating the blood vessels to continue the irritation?

From what I can gather, it is possible that it is bile and toxins from a weakened liver; my Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist also confirmed this to me.

So what do we do?

My first suggestion is to strengthen the Adrenal System in hopes that they might be able to minimize any excess histamine in the body.

My next suggestion is to strengthen the Liver and the Kidneys, which are our "housekeeping" organs or, our "purifiers."

Which Means: WATER! WATER! WATER! To cleanse and flush, a high quality prenatal vitamin, Extra Vitamin B's (I recommend a sublingual complex), Fish Oil or an Omega 3 supplement taken regularly to aid the Adrenal System in their duty. Also, to decrease the amount of histamine in the body vitamin C is recommended as well as a high quality antioxidant supplement.

Milk Thistle and Dandelion Root will aid the Liver and Kidneys, and Cayenne will enhance these herbs abilities as well as aid the circulatory system and the metabolism of fats in the liver.

Forum Topic: Treatments for Night Terrors

Author: Jackie C
"Is anyone aware of any natural treatments available for night terrors. The patient is a 6 year old female who suffers from glucose intolerance and asthma. She is 20 pounds overweight and for the past 6 months has been awaking from sleep screaming and unconsoleable 2 to 4 times a night. I have recently researched the use of additional folic acid for the asthma attacks and she has recently been taken off Atirax. I have given her melatonin to try and balance out her sleep habits, but if anyone has any other suggestions I would be grateful."

My Responce:
My son is now 5 years old. He/we have struggled with his night terrors ever since he was three years old. When I started studying Holistic Health, I became more active in trying to prevent his night terrors naturally. The night terrors have gradually eased over time. However, from year 4 to 5 it took time, attention, and action.

Initially, we focused on taking note of possible triggers. We recognized that the terrors were worse when he didn't nap well during the day. We also noted that stressors such as starting swimming lessons before he was ready (this was the most noticeable) or a long day with too much stimulation caused a rough night.

Along with recognizing the triggers I began a nutritional supplement regimen. During the day I made sure he took the following:

A quality vitamin by Natures Plus

Omega 3's

Vitamin B Sublingual

Occasionally when I knew he was going through a growth spurt I added liquid calcium w/ Magnesium to the regimine.

Before Nap and Bedtime I administered the following to him (He only needed these for a couple of months):

Lavender Oil: a tiny touch along his forehead and on his wrists (HE LOVES THIS!)

Valerian Super Calm by Herbs for Kids

We have followed this regimen for over a year. He is now almost 6 years old and I have no doubt that this full regimen made a huge difference. He now only has occasional Night Terrors.

Mama Is Back!

I haven't fallen off of the planet, although some may have wondered! I have had to take a break from my own studies in order to care for my family while my husband is working and going to school full time. However, there is no more time to put off and there is never a perfect time for a mother to "study." So here I am! Now I am a few months away from my certification deadline, I am 19 weeks pregnant, I have two active boys, and life is never too quiet. Perfect setting for a final lap of schooling, wouldn't you say!?

All is well! With that said, I advise that each meal and/or snack be as “homemade” as possible. Food that are “pre-made” are often very refined and filled with extra sugars and additives to preserve their freshness. I highly recommend reading food labels. Before reading the labels, try to think about how you would prepare the item by scratch at home. If the label is filled with multiple ingredients that you are unfamiliar with and/or with ingredients that you would not add at home, avoid it! Focus on whole grains rather then grains that are refined (have had the fiber removed from them.) Increase your daily fiber, vegetables, and fruit intake. Filtered water and fiber are two good things to focus on. Feel free to visit my Healthy Cooking blog www.HealthyMamasKitchen.blogspot.com for a few tips and ideas. Organic foods are often advised for anyone who is seeking optimum nutrition. However, when there is a goal to balance hormones, organic foods play an even more important role. Many of the products that are used to treat food and crops against pests have been found to affect the hormone balance in humans. Because of this, I highly recommend eating as many organic or personally home grown/raised foods as possible. Local farmers markets are a good place to find organic (pesticide/treated free) produce and foods.

Recommended Herbs and Nutrients including dosage: Abnormal ovarian cysts most often stem from a hormone imbalance in the body. In order for the body to truly regulate itself, it has to have all of the vital nutrients that it requires to function. Unfortunately, in our world today it is not likely that we will come close to getting all of the essential nutrients from the foods that we eat. This is why quality supplementation is strongly recommended. I recommend the following supplements:
Rainbow Light Prenatal System (I recommend the “Complete Prenatal System. However, it requires you to take six pills per day. So the “Just Once, Prenatal One” is the next best thing.)
Omega 3 Essential Fatty Acids
Liquid Vitamin B Complex with added Vitamin C (You'll need to purchase two bottles for a 1 month supply.)
Chaste Berry Herb a.k.a Vitex (To be used as a hormone tonic. The recommended dose is two capsules daily. Start out with 1 capsule for 1 week. Then move up to two capsules.)
(1) round of Liquid Iron (This is recommended but can be considered optional. I recommend this for any women who has been pregnant, given birth, and breastfed in the last year even if they are currently taking a prenatal with iron included, unless the woman consumes large amounts of red meat throughout the week. Only use the liquid iron as this extra. Liquid Iron is more easily absorbed into the body.)

Relaxation techniques and exercise: I recommend walking at least 15 minutes daily. This increases circulation throughout the body, which aids in the healing process. Pilates and Yoga are also very therapeutic to the inner balance in the body.

My Own Experience: Juice Cleansing For Breastfeeding Mothers

I will be the first to tell you that a good colon and internal systems cleanse is a great idea. However, I can also tell you that as a mother who is nursing a baby, colon cleansing is not an easy venture. Most colon cleanses are made with all kinds of herbs. But the possible danger to the baby is not only the unknown effects that herbs might have on the baby, but all of the toxins that can be sifted up as they are working their way out of the body. So I have been on a quest to find a cleansing method that is effective, yet gentle enough to do while breastfeeding my baby. The following is my conclusion.

I call this "Nursing Mama's Gentle Cleanse" The concept is not original. The other titles for this type of cleanse would be a "Juice Cleanse." However, I feel that my version has a few additions that make it easier to follow week to week. It is also created for a nursing mother's calorie requirements.

The guidelines are very simple:

Start the morning off with water and a fiber supplement such as Colonix Intestinal Cleanser or Metamucil (if you want to steer clear of herbs). Also, take your high quality vitamin supplements including an Omega 3 supplement.

Throughout the rest of the morning and afternoon snack on juices, water, rice cakes, and nuts. I suggest both fruit and vegetable juices. When I say Juice I mean 100% juice with NO added sugars whatsoever such as the brands NAKED, Odwalla, Dole 100% Juice, V8, etc. In order to fulfill your breastfeeding calorie needs you have to be consuming at least one serving of juice every hour.

By dinner time you will be ready for more substance then Juice. I recommend having soup for dinner. Vegetable soups with only a little bit of meat (if any) and no cream soups. And more water.

Close your day with another round of fiber supplement and water.

I noticed the effects of this cleanse within the first day of following these guidelines. I followed this for one week. I found that I enjoyed it so much that I followed it for another week. This is a good way to help the body regulate itself and be nourished as well. I felt my body cleansing itself of built up waist as well as added energy. I would recommend following this cleanse for two consecutive weeks and then alternating weeks as long as you feel the need. The nutrients that are found in fruits and vegetables are truly remarkable. I have added a few of the main ingredients that are included in many of the juice drinks that I use. This can give you a small glimpse of how these fruits and vegetable really work to cleanse your body as you drink them. In addition to soluble and insoluble fiber, blueberries also contain tannins, which act as astringents in the digestive system to reduce inflammation. Blueberries also promote urinary tract health. Blueberries contain the same compounds found in cranberries that help prevent or eliminate urinary tract infections. In order for bacteria to infect, they must first adhere to the mucosal lining of the urethra and bladder. Components found in cranberry and blueberry juice reduce the ability of E. coli, the bacteria that is the most common cause of urinary tract infections, to adhere.

Grapefruit

Protection against Colon Cancer
Not only are grapefruit rich in vitamin C, but new research presented at the 228th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society provides two more reasons to drink grapefruit juice: protection against lung and colon cancer.
In humans, drinking three 6-ounce glasses of grapefruit juice a day was shown to reduce the activity of an enzyme that activates cancer-causing chemicals found in tobacco smoke. In rats whose colons were injected with carcinogens, grapefruit and its isolated active compounds (apigenin, hesperidin, limonin, naringin, naringenin, nobiletin) not only increased the suicide (apoptosis) of cancer cells, but also the production of normal colon cells.
Researchers also confirmed that grapefruit may help prevent weight gain by lowering insulin levels.

Raspberries

Phytonutrients for Antioxidant, Antimicrobial and Anticarcinogenic Protection
As an antioxidant food containing ellagic acid, raspberries help prevent unwanted damage to cell membranes and other structures in the body by neutralizing free radicals. Ellagic acid is not the only well-researched phytonutrient component of raspberry, however. Raspberry's flavonoid content is also well documented. Here the key substances are quercetin, kaempferol, and the cyanidin-based molecules called cyanidin-3-glucosylrutinoside and cyanidin-3-rutinoside. These flavonoid molecules are also classified as anthocyanins, and they belong to the group of substances that give raspberries their rich red color. Raspberries' anthocyanins also give these delectable berries unique antioxidant properties, as well as some antimicrobial ones, including the ability to prevent overgrowth of certain bacteria and fungi in the body (for example, the yeast Candida albicans, which is a frequent culprit in vaginal infections and can be a contributing cause in irritable bowel syndrome).

Strawberries

Potent Antioxidant Protection from Phenols
Strawberries, like other berries, are famous in the phytonutrient world as a rich surce of phenols. In the strawberry, these phenols are led by the anthocyanins (especially anthocyanin 2) and by the ellagitannins. The anthocyanins in strawberry not only provide its flush red color, they also serve as potent antioxidants that have repeatedly been shown to help protect cell structures in the body and to prevent oxygen damage in all of the body's organ systems. Strawberries' unique phenol content makes them a heart-protective fruit, an anti-cancer fruit, and an anti-inflammatory fruit, all rolled into one. The anti-inflammatory properties of strawberry include the ability of phenols in this fruit to lessen activity of the enzyme cyclo-oxygenase, or COX. Non-steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen block pain by blocking this enzyme, whose overactivity has been shown to contribute to unwanted inflammation, such as that which is involved in rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, asthma, atherosclerosis, and cancer. Unlike drugs that are COX-inhibitors, however, strawberries do not cause intestinal bleeding.

Bananas

Improving Elimination
Bananas are a smart move if you suffer from elimination problems. A bout of diarrhea can quickly deplete your body of important electrolytes. Bananas can replenish your stores of potassium, one of the most important electrolytes, which helps regulate heart function as well as fluid balance.
In addition, bananas contain pectin, a soluble fiber (called a hydrocolloid) that can help normalize movement through the digestive tract and ease constipation. Bananas also contain resistant starch, but this amount varies depending on their degree of ripeness. In their lesser ripe stages, bananas score as low as 30 on the glycemic index (below 50 would be considered low). In their riper stages, this number usually rises to a moderate level in the 60's. All of the above features help place banana in a more favorable digestive light than might otherwise be expected for a sugary fruit.

Case Study: Surgery Recovery, Arthritis, Reduced Energy

Client: Mrs. D
Symptoms: Reduced Energy due to recent back and colon surgeries. Try to spend at least 15 minutes every day out in the sun light. This aids many functions of the body such as bone growth and regeneration, the body’s time clock, and the nervous system. When you are indoors throughout the day, try to let in as much sunlight as possible. As the sun goes down try to calm down with the sunset by engaging in quieter and calming activities such as reading or listening to calming music or a calming book recording. This can all aid the body in the sleep process. Avoid watching loud and stimulating television within one hour prior to going to bed.

Spiritual Suggestions: Participate in personal scripture study and prayer each morning and night.

Daily Research: The Blood Type Diet

As I have studied with GCNM I have learned a little bit about how blood type can determine a persons health. I decided to research it more after reading about it in Patrick Holford's book The New Optimum Nutrition Bible. I was lucky enough to come upon the books that have been written to define this theory. Doctor Peter J.D' Adamo is the founding father of what is now known as "The Blood Type Diet." Here is a great article introducing his theory.

How Blood Type Determines Your Health
One of the hallmarks of alternative medicine is the recognition of the biochemical uniqueness of each individual and the need to tailor treatments and prescriptions to match that individual variability. While a person's genetic code, ultimately, is the basis of this individuality, basing treatments on genetic factors is too broad an approach and not consistent with alternative medicine.

According to naturopath Peter J. D'Adamo, N.D., in his book Eat Right 4 Your Type, the missing link might be the four basic blood types: O, A, B, and AB. "There had to be a reason why there were so many paradoxes in dietary studies and disease survival," why some people lose weight and others do not on the same diet or why some people keep their vitality as they age, and others do not, says Dr. D'Adamo.

His research into anthropology, medical history, and genetics led him to conclude that blood type is "the key that unlocks the door to the mysteries of health, disease, longevity, physical vitality, and emotional strength." Dr. D'Adamo explains that the practical application of the blood type "key" is that it enables you to make informed choices about your dietary, exercise, supplement, and even medical treatment plans. With the blood type "road map," these plans can now "correspond to your exact biological profile" and "the dynamic natural forces within your own body."

Type O-People with type O blood fare best on intense physical exercise and animal proteins and less well on dairy products and grains, says Dr. D'Adamo. The leading reason for weight gain among Type O's is the gluten found in wheat products and, to a lesser extent, lentils, corn, kidney beans, and cabbage, Dr. D'Adamo explains. Ideal exercises for Type O's include aerobics, martial arts, contact sports, and running.

Type A-Those with blood type A, however, are more naturally suited to a vegetarian diet and foods that are fresh, pure, and organic. As Type A's are predisposed to heart disease, cancer, and diabetes, "I can't emphasize how critical this dietary adjustment can be to the sensitive immune system of Type A," says Dr. D'Adamo. Type A's prefer calming, centering exercise, such as yoga and tai chi.

Type B-Type B's have a strong immune system and a tolerant digestive system and tend to resist many of the severe chronic degenerative illnesses, or at least survive them better than the other blood types. Type B's do best with moderate physical exercise requiring mental balance, such as hiking, cycling, tennis, and swimming.

Type AB-Blood type AB, the most recent, in terms of evolution, of the four groups and an amalgam of types A and B, is the most biologically complex. For this group, a combination of the exercises for types A and B works best, says Dr. D'Adamo.

Blood type, with its digestive and immune specificity, is a window on a person's probable susceptibility to or power over disease, according to Dr. D'Adamo. For example, Type O's are the most likely to suffer from asthma, hay fever, and other allergies, while Type B's have a high allergy threshold, and will react allergically only if they eat the wrong foods. Type B's are also especially susceptible to autoimmune disorders, such as chronic fatigue, lupus, and multiple sclerosis. Type AB's tend to have the fewest problems with allergies, while heart disease, cancer, and anemia are medical risks for them.

With arthritis, Type O's, again, are the predominant sufferers because their immune systems are "environmentally intolerant," especially to foods such as grains and potatoes which can produce inflammatory reactions in their joints, says Dr. D'Adamo. Types A and B are the most susceptible to diabetes, while types A and AB have an overall higher rate of cancer and poorer survival odds than the other types.

While you cannot change your blood type, you can use knowledge about its nature to implement a dietary plan biologically suited to your makeup, says Dr. D'Adamo, who supplies copious details on eating plans for all four types. "Most of my patients experience some results [within two weeks of starting the diet plan]-increased energy, weight loss, a lessening of digestive complaints, and improvement of chronic conditions such as asthma, headaches, and heartburn."

-Excerpted From: Alternative Medicine Digest, Future Medicine Publishing (source)

To learn more go to Doctor D' Adamo's website: Eat Right For Your Type

Case Study: PCOS, Long Menstrual Cycles, Infertility

Client: Mrs. M
Symptoms: PSOS, Long Menstrual Cycles, Infertility
Goals: Pregnancy

My Conclusion: PCOS, long menstrual cycles, and infertility often stem from an excess of the estrogen hormone. This imbalance can happen over a period of time, or in a short period due to a sudden stress on the body and its emotions. Outside sources such as medications and the foods we eat have a great influence on the hormone balance in the body. The following suggestions are ways that you might be able to help the body regulate its hormones to a balanced state.

Dietary Suggestions: Focus on whole grains, vegetables, fruits, and filtered water. Use as many organic foods as possible. Try to avoid dairy products, or keep them to a minimum. Avoid pre-made and pre-cooked foods as much as possible. The refinement, enrichment, and additives in these pre-made foods have the potential to cause hormone imbalance. Try to keep your microwave use down to a minimum. Studies have shown that extensive microwave use (and food eaten after microwaving) can weaken the reproductive organs in men and women. NEVER eat anything that has artificial sweeteners (Aspartame, Acesulfame K, acesulfame potassium (just remember Ace), Sucralose, and their brand names: NutraSweet, Splenda, and Sweet n’Low.) Artificial sweeteners are very dangerous this is not a myth! Use sugar sparingly. Use as many foods that market their Omega 3 value as possible (Smart Balance, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Free Range Eggs, etc.)
Until pregnancy is accomplished: Avoid meat. When you do eat meat, try to only eat chicken, and only the chicken that says that it has not been treated with hormones. Animals can be treated with many types of hormones and other things that have the potential to cause hormone imbalance. When the body is already struggling, it is best to avoid these foods.
Feel free to browse through or follow my Healthy Mama’s Kitchen blog for some healthy eating ideas and tips.

Recommended Herbs and Nutrients Including Dosage: ** Highest Importance.
**Continue taking your Prenatal Plus vitamins. I personally recommend the Rainbow Light Complete Prenatal vitamin. It is slightly different then Prenatal Plus because it has higher dosages of certain things, as well as a few other things that the Prenatal Plus does not have. However, you also have to take 6 pills every day, which isn’t always easy. I consider Prenatal Plus to be a good vitamin.
Add the following to your daily supplement regimen:
**Four grams of Essential Fatty Acids. I recommend NSI Mega Omega. Omegas are just as they say, essential to the health of the whole body. In your condition, they can aid with inflammation, and balancing the hormones in your body. These should be taken throughout pregnancy and the rest of your life.
Extra Vitamin B. No less then a 150mg per day B-Complex (pill form). Sublingual will be the easiest to absorb into the body. Birth control pills as well as some of the prescription medications that you have taken or, are taking, tend to block or deplete the B vitamins from absorbing into the body. These will be helpful throughout your pregnancy.
One round of a liquid Iron supplement. Iron deficiency causes weakness to all of the body’s systems. Liquid Iron with vitamin C absorbs much easier then other iron supplements. This would be helpful to do on an occasional basis throughout your childbearing years.
**Vitex (Chasteberry) (as recommended on the bottle). This herb has been successfully used to balance the estrogen and progesterone hormones in the body. It is easy to use because you can take it throughout the month and not have to worry about which week to take it. It has also been used with the Metformin without known problems, and with success. Take this regularly, as it has been known to take time to take effect. However, it has also been known to work within one cycle. Stop taking this as soon as pregnancy is achieved.
There are other herbs that can be added to Vitex. But I would recommend trying this regimen for 3 months before adding to it.

Lifestyle Modification/Changes:
MORNING LIGHT and MOON LIT NIGHT: The menstrual cycle depends heavily on our body clock to cycle properly. The body systems use bright light during the day (particularly morning) to set the awake/asleep clock. It relies on moonlight to regulate the menstrual cycle. Darkness may be one of the biggest reasons menstrual cycles become irregular. Studies have shown that “Light Therapy” helps to regulate the menstrual cycle. You can use direct natural sun light or BLUEWAVE lights for this therapy. The directions are as follows:
BLUEWAVETM Therapy 15-30 minutes in the morning and evening to extend your active day length. BLUEWAVETM light technology is specially designed to produce the active hormone, serotonin and suppress melatonin. Melatonin is often called the ‘hibernation hormone’ and is thought to restrict other hormones that promote a healthy menstrual cycle. Your body produces higher levels of melatonin during the winter, and when you don’t get enough bright light.
Nighttime light. Use a 50-watt table lamp approximately three feet from your bedside. You only have to use this light on days 13 through 17 of your cycle. This will replicate the level of a bright, moonlight night and should regulate your cycle within a few weeks. This level of nightlight will also help control the production of melatonin.
In short, this is saying that it is important to spend minimum 15 minutes outside in the bright morning sunlight every day. If this is not possible on a regular basis, BLUEWAVE Technology lights might be a consideration.

Relaxation Techniques and Exercises:
I recommend Yoga and Pilates. These techniques aid in ways such as weight loss, circulation, and relieving stress.

Personally Authored Forum Topic: Parasite Symptoms While Breastfeeding

Two years ago, I began my serious journey to optimum health. I had just experienced a pregnancy miscarriage due to low progesterone and the loss of my twin daughters at 25 weeks gestation due to Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome. Before I go on, you need to know that my grief is under control, and that is not an issue (and No, that is not denial!J) My body was weak from 6 weeks of bed rest and a rough pregnancy. I began eating well, walking daily, and taking a series of great vitamin supplements. I have continued this lifestyle for the past two years. In between the two years, I became pregnant (had a rough but not Horrible pregnancy) and gave birth to a healthy baby boy. I’ve continued the healthy life style, and by this point in my journey, if you knew me and the details in between, you would think I should be living in a clear state of optimum health. But I am not. These are my problems:

I was diagnosed with Severe Anemia. I focused on quality iron supplementation for three months and the tests show that I am back in the normal range. I cannot maintain a good mood balance without antidepressants (Paxil 10mg). From research I know that I have low Serotonin and above average Dopamine. My whole body is in a state of chronic pain (muscle and skeletal). This can be managed as long as I take my supplements, but even with them, the pain seeps through (especially after laying down or sleeping). I have managed to lose several pounds. But I can’t seem to lose the weight in my belly section. I have stomach pains throughout the day. I still struggle with constipation even after eating over the RDA of fiber every day. I have to deal with gas and bloating, as well as what I thought were hemorrhoid symptoms. I also struggle with very strong sweets cravings especially in the evenings.

Let me get to the point: After studying the Toxicity section of Modular 1, I am afraid that I have some form of a parasite and that it is blocking the absorption of all of the nutrients that I am trying to feed my body. The WORST part about it all is that I am breastfeeding my 11 month old baby. I would simply stop breastfeeding him and do a cleanse, but he still would prefer to nurse around three feedings each day as well as at night. Technically, he is old enough to wean, but I take feeding him breast milk Very Seriously and I won’t wean him until I know for sure that it is the best thing to do. The next problem is that I am ready to become pregnant again. But I really want to feel better (probably do a cleanse) before I get pregnant again. I am hoping for your quality help and suggestions!!

FORUM RESPONSE:

Hi MammaBaron

Congratulations on continuing to breastfeed and "taking it seriously". As I lactation consultant and a searcher for optimum health myself, I hope I can assist you with some of your health issues. 1. Have you actually been tested for parasites? Seeing that you are breastfeeding and it may be challenge to treat for parasites, it may be helpful to get a stool sample evaluated so you know for sure. I did some research on antiparasitic treatment and found a natural antiparasitic treatment called Vitaklenz, but its absolute safety during breastfeeding could not be supported by the manufacturers unfortunately. I am mentioning it however, because it may be an option in the future for your child- may be used for 2 years and older.
See http://vitaklenzforkidz.com/vitaklenz4kids.htm for more information.

I did, however, find a great article from the Journal of Human Lactation, in which Porto states that amongst the 5 most common anthelmintics, invermectin in the only one reviewed by the American Academy of Pediatrics as safe during lactation. It is suggested that exposure can be minimized by taking the drug before the longest sleep interval for the infant. A word of caution: invermectin is contra-indicated for liver disease. Porto, I. 2003. Antiparasitic drugs and lactation: focus on anthelmintics, scabicides, and pediculicides. J Hum Lact. Nov; 19(4):421-5. 2. In regards to mood disorders- I would encourage you to consider researching further on 5 HTP. A wonderful resource I would like to share with you is http://www.womentowomen.com/ the following is an excerpt: "Serotonin is synthesized in the brain and the digestive tract, which is also the source of its precursors. This is yet another reason why what you eat and how well you digest are crucial to how you feel! L–tryptophan, an essential amino acid found in food and supplements, is converted in your body into 5–hydroxytryptophan (5–HTP), and then into 5–hydroxytryptamine ( 5–HT), which is the chemical name for serotonin".
From http://www.womentowomen.com/depressionanxietyandmood/antidepressants.aspx
3. Please also consider supplements of omega 3 fatty acids if you are not already taking one "Nordic Naturals" is a quality reliable supplement. Please also consider a supplement of Vitamin D3 1000-2000 IU daily see http://www.grassrootshealth.org/ for more information.
There is an article by Bruce Hollis entitled "Vitamin D Requirements during Pregnancy and Lactation" http://www.grassrootshealth.org/_download/Hollis%20GrassrootsHealth.pdf
I hope you find this helpful. Best wishes Sharon
- Sharon Johnson HHP student

MY RESPONSE:

Hi Sharon, Thank you so much for your clear and detailed answer and suggestions. I am actually waiting for the results of a stool sample as well as some blood tests from my doctor. I will follow up here with the results. I am also going to find a practitioner who can do a hair and live blood cell analysis for me. I will follow up with those as well. Would it be acceptable to use Science Detox or Colonix in a lower dosage? If the woman becomes pregnant while using something like Science Detox are there direct risk factors for the development of the fetus or is the risk factor because of the abdominal contractions created through the cleansing, or is it something else? I guess what I'm actually wondering is if a woman who was on a detox regime became pregnant would the use of the regime result in a miscarriage or something else?"

Question From Instructor: Heather Johnstone PhD RN BC APN AMP-C RYT Director GCNM/Director GIFAM
"Students, What happens while you detox? How might that impact your hormonal axis as preparation for conception? How might it impact your vaginal pH? How might your in utero environment be impacted? How might the embryo and then fetus be impacted?"

My Response:
When a person detoxifies the body by using a colon cleanse, the toxins and dangerous matter that has collected in the colon as well as the blood gets “stirred up” within the body. If all goes well with the colon cleanse, then these negative things will be quickly lifted away and eliminated out of the body. However, during that time of upheaval, all of those dangerous toxins cause a moment of imbalance in the body as a whole (just as they did when they entered the body.) Toxins negatively affect the endocrine system as a whole. Therefore, a woman who is trying to conceive will have to deal with the teeter-totter effect of imbalanced hormones due to the temporary cleansing. Another factor about cleansing is that many herbs that help the body cleanse itself, also cause the uterus to contract. These contractions (even though they are not necessarily felt) make it more difficult for the egg to implant into the uterus. If the woman is already pregnant and she is early in her pregnancy, these contractions could cause a miscarriage of the pregnancy. In addition, the stirred up toxins that are in the mother’s blood can seep into the placenta, which will then enter into the baby’s bloodstream. This is all very dangerous for the baby.

Daily Research: Bruxism (Teeth Grinding)

I have a four year old son who has a serious problem with grinding his teeth at night. It has gotten to the point that it is beginning to wear on his teeth. I was studying my GCNM Text: The New Optimum Nutrition Bible, by Patrick Holford. He gives a great analysis of all of the different vitamins and their benefits as well as their deficiency signs. According to Holford, teeth grinding is a sign or a deficiency in vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid.)

I decided to do further research in this to find another source to confirm this as well as any further information and suggestions about the matter. I found a source that gives suggestions that confirm Holford's diagnosis as well as a good list of remedies for the condition. The information is as follows:

Health911.com

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

" Grinding your teeth at night can cause a number of problems, such as seriously wearing down your teeth, loosening the teeth, gum reduction, jaw joint problems, and may be a cause of headaches during the day. You may not realize you are grinding your teeth unless somebody sleeping with you notices it. Otherwise you may notice symptoms to alert you to the problem, such as headaches, aching jaw muscles, loose teeth or gum problems.

Studies have shown that one of the causes is a deficiency in pantothenic acid (one of the B-vitamins) and calcium. Pantothenic acid, an anti-stress vitamin, reduces the production of certain hormones from the adrenal glands. A lack of pantothenic acid is a factor in the control of motor activity; bruxism is a sign that motor activity is not under control. A calcium deficiency causes muscle cramps or involuntary movement of muscles in the mouth resulting in grinding of the teeth. Chew a few calcium or bone meal tablets before bedtime. This remedy seems to reduce contractions of the jaw muscles. Another idea is to crush the tablets and combine them with wheat germ oil and mix with food or drink to make it palatable.

A magnesium deficiency may be another cause. A deficiency can cause spasming, and seems to affect people at night. Leg cramps and teeth grinding are just two ways a magnesium deficiency manifests itself at night. See our remedy below.

Another possible cause of bruxism is parasites. Pinworms, a common parasite, can cause teeth grinding. A large percentage of the population has some form of parasitic infestation, so have a stool analysis test to determine if you have parasites. Then try an herbal parasite cleanse, not a drug remedy.

Some people who have bruxism are internalizing their anger. There are many ways to deal with anger, but it is not the scope of this section. However, meditation, tai chi, and exercise are a few methods to try. Anything that will help you relax will be beneficial. A method called Emotional Freedom Technique may be helpful in dealing with stress and anger.

Tips
To eliminate your tooth grinding problem here are several suggestions: try taking a warm bath before bedtime; drink less alcohol. Your dentist will be able to assess the extent of tooth damage caused by this problem. The dentist may recommend a custom-fitted mouth guard (expensive) to be worn while you sleep or you may purchase one from a sporting goods store. If the problem persists, consider cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Changes to Make
Supplements

Take supplements or foods rich in pantothenic acid and calcium to help relieve your tooth grinding problem.

Calcium Take calcium before going to bed. This will help relax your muscles.

Lavender Mix 3-4 drops of lavender essential oil in a teaspoon of almond or olive oil and massage in onto your jaw and neck close to the jaw. Also, drink some lavender tea regularly.

Magnesium Take 4-500 mg of magnesium before going to bed. This, too, will help relax your muscles and will prevent leg cramps, too.

Pantothenic acid is found in multivitamins, and should be taken daily.

Valerian Mix 3-4 drops of valerian essential oil in a teaspoon of almond or olive oil and massage in onto your jaw and neck close to the jaw. Also, drink some valerian tea regularly." - Health911.com

I really liked these suggestions. As a mother, these suggestions are very doable. As a HHP these suggestions are in line with the education that I have gained so far as a student, including the suggestion that teeth grinding might be a sign of a parasite.

Module 1 Subject: Worms and Parasites

This subject was disturbing to me, of course! The thought of having a worm inside my body or the body of my husband or children motivated me to take extra action to prevent the possibility as much as possible.

According to my GCNM text, it is possible that up to 85-95% of the adult population of North America is infected with at least one form of parasite (worms are considered a parasite). Humans can play host to over 100 different kinds of parasites from microscopic ones to tapeworms that can grow to be several feet long. With this prediction it is most reasonably possible that you and I are facing this fact.

There are dozens of negative health symptoms that could be considered signs of a parasite infection in the body. As you can imagine, the majority of those symptoms are related to the digestive system. However, there are many symptoms that one might not even consider a parasite being the cause. Such as teeth grinding, cravings for sweets, moodiness, depression, anemia, sinus congestion, and water retention.

Parasites feed off of their host. They either literally feed on the blood and cells of the host, or they intercept the nutrients going into the host and consume them. This is why people infected with parasites can become so ill.

SIMPLIFIED VERSION OF HOW TO PREVENT BECOMING A HOST:

Parasites thrive in warm and humid environments. So if you live in a climate that is warm and humid, Take Note!

Parasites thrive in soil and sand. Walking barefoot leaves one open for contamination.

Animal (and human) feces and urine are prime breeding ground for parasites. Be careful to use gloves while changing litter boxes, and handling these things. This includes baby diapers. Use a sealed diaper pale and keep in mind that parasites can also be in the air.

We are all taught to wash our hands after using the restroom. This is Prime Reason for doing such things!

HOW TO ELIMINATE PARASITES:

If you suspect a parasite might be cause for concern, a colon cleanse might be a very good idea. Even if you do not have a parasite a colon cleanse is a good thing. A high quality colon cleanse will always include the herbs and ingredients required to rid the body of parasites. Look for products that contain: Wormwood, Cloves, Garlic, Yellow Dock, Pau d' arco, Black Walnuts, and Pumpkin Seeds. It is also a good idea to discuss your concerns with a Holistic Health Practitioner. They will be able to help you throughout the process of cleansing your body systems as well as rebuilding your nutrient base in the body.

I recommend this Herbal Colon Cleanse. I have personally used it and I recommend it: Colonix (Always read product warnings before beginning such things, and follow them!)

I also recommend this Colon Cleanse as an alternative to a Herbal Colon Cleanse: Oxy-Powder

Daily Research: Adoptive Mother Breastfeeding

I have a dear friend who will be adopting a baby in one month. She is unable to become pregnant because health problems required a full hysterectomy. My friend was able to have two children prior to the hysterectomy. She was able to breastfeed both of her children and had a wonderful experience doing so. She understands the benefits of breastfeeding and came to me to talk about whether or not it is possible to breastfeed this adopted baby. The answer is, YES!
Adoptive mothers breastfeeding their newly adopted babies has become almost common practice. My friend knew that re-lactation was possible. But she was unsure whether or not it was possible for a women who has had a hysterectomy. I was thrilled to be able to let her know that breastfeeding is indeed possible for a woman who has had a hysterectomy. The hormones that make lactation possible are hormones produced by the pituitary gland, not the ovaries.
Another common question is whether or not a woman who has never been pregnant or lactated before can breastfeed a baby. I am again thrilled to say that the answer is YES!
A woman produces breast milk due to hormone changes in the body and stimulation to the breast. "Prolactin (PRL) or Luteotropic hormone (LTH) is a peptide hormone primarily associated with lactation. In breastfeeding, the act of an infant suckling the nipple stimulates the production of prolactin, which fills the breast with milk via a process called lactogenesis, in preparation for the next feed. Oxytocin, another hormone, is also released, which triggers milk let-down." - Wikipedia Encyclopidia
So how can an adoptive mother begin the process of stimulating lactation and ultimately breastfeeding her adopted baby? Here are my suggestions:

1. Build a support group. The process of stimulating lactaion or re-lactation is not necessarily easy. It takes time, patience, and a positive outlook on the whole experience. It is important to surround yourself with positive and supporting influences.

2. Nourish your body. Begin taking prenatal vitamins (Rainbow Light are my personal favorite.) I also encourage supplementing with Omega 3 (NSI are my personal favorite.) Study up on the fact that what you put into your body eventually may be excreted through your breast milk. Begin making any changes necessary.

3. Start pumping! Invest in a high quality electric breast pump. Make sure that it is a dual pump so you can pump both breasts at the same time. It is also very helpful to have an adapter included that makes it possible to plug the pump in while you are on road trips in the car or away from home. Purchase a hands free pumping bra (here is what I recommend.) This is very helpful when you are trying to pump several times throughout the day. I also highly recommend a nursing cover up (this is what I recommend.) My recommendation is for a woman to pump an average of every two to four hours throughout the day, sleep through the night, and pump again first thing in the morning (not going more then 9 hours in between the last night and morning pumping session).

4. Herbs: Funugreek has been used by women for centuries to promote lactation in women. Rema Jensen MD has written a great article titled Fenugreek: Overlooked But Not Forgotten. She writes from personal experience about how Fenugreek promotes lactation. Milk Thistle is another herb that has been known to promote the production of breast milk in women. Milk Thistle stimulates blood flow to the breasts which leads to increased production of breast milk.

5. Medication: There is a medication that has a side effect that increases the production of Prolactin. It is called Domperidone (Motilium™.) Domperidone increases prolactin secretion indirectly, by interfering with the action of dopamine. One of the actions of dopamine is that it decreases the secretion of prolactin by the pituitary gland. Doctor Jack Newman, MD, FRCPC has written an article on adopting.org about Domperidone. He gives a good overview on the pros and cons of using Domperidone to increase the Prolactin hormone.

How Long Will It Take? What If I Need Milk NOW? This is the big question. Because every woman's body is different, everyone will have a different outcome. Some women have been known to have drops of milk within a week after pumping, other times it takes months. Occasionally women are able to produce enough milk to sustain their baby's needs. Most of the time a secondary supplementing source is necessary. I recommend the Lact Aid Nursing Trainer. Darrillyn Starr has written an article that gives an overview of the different Nursing Supplementers. She writes from personal experience which is always helpful.

Breast Milk or Formula? I am a strong advocate of breast milk. I am not however against formula (especially in this circumstance.) Some women feel comfortable using both the breast milk they can provide as well as formula to fill in the gaps. There is also the option of using donated breast milk from another woman. You would be amazed at how many women have frozen breast milk stored in their deep freezers.:) If this is something you want to consider I suggest asking close family and friends first and then going to your nearest La Leche League International Leader.

What Should I Stay Away From? I recommend talking to your doctor if you are taking any anti depressants that effect the dopamine level in the body such as Wellbutrin. I am not in any way saying that anyone should go off of medication, I just want to make a note that high levels of dopamine might interfere with the production of prolactin in the body.

Forum Topic: Colic

FORUM TOPIC: Colic
Author: "New Research published in Pediatrics show that [quote]95 percent of colicky babies who were given probiotic drops cried dramatically less after one month. The probiotic used in the study Lactobacillus reuteri which is available without a prescription." - elka chavez Master Herbalist

Post Comments:
"My son suffered from bouts of colic. Since I was breastfeeding, I pared down to a very basic allergen free diet. Then I reintroduced foods to see if there were any reactions. I found I could eat goat dairy, but not cow. I had to stay away from wheat as well. Other sources of painfully gassy foods for their tiny, underdeveloped intestinal tracts include, onion, garlic, leeks, all the brassica (these include broccoli, kale, cabbage and cauliflower) Sometimes soy, mushrooms and fruit and especially dried fruit. Oh! sugar and caffeine can really be hard for a baby! Everything passes through breast milk. Luckily, that means chamomile and catnip tea. Check out Susan Weed's book "Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year" She suggests acidophilus as well as tea made from fennel, dill, caraway, anise, cumin, or coriander. She says, "Drink a cup of seed tea as you settle down to nurse; the antispasmodic and carminative effects pass readily into your breast milk. Or give your baby a bottle of seed tea to suck on. Prepare seed tea by pouring one cup of boiling water over a scant teaspoon of any one of these seeds. Steep for no more than fifteen minutes. Strain very thoroughly before filling baby's bottle." - Katie

"I would like to expand on the New Yorker article (Sept 17th 2007 edition); I use essential oils for colic babies. I have authored the book "Raising Children Well with Aromatherapy". When my first daughter was born she was very colicky. I would make a massage oil blend that I would use regularly for the times when she was uncomfortable.
2 oz. sweet almond oil
4 drops of Lavender
1 drop of Chamomile R.
For a more severe colic; I would use 4 drops of dill in place of the Lavender and Chamomile R. I would rub her belly in a circular motion. Dill is not the sweetest scent; however, it worked for us. You can also turn the baby over and massage the lower portion of her/his back." - Aster, student HHP

Mama's Comments:
I am a mother of two boys. Before my boys were born I was a nanny for ten years. I am very familiar with Colic. However, I am just as familiar with all of the different ways that colic manifests itself as well as all of the many ways that mothers have found to alleviate it's symptoms.

When I gave birth to my first son he was born with severe GERD. I could not lay him down at all for his first two months of life. He slept in his bouncy seat and swing. His GERD was also accompanied with Colic. Unfortunately, the only solution I found for him was Probiotics (I say this because I know there are other things that help.) The probiotics are a very good idea. I know they are helpful. But they do not give an immediate relief to the colic symptoms.

I found the right tools for colic when my second son was born. He did not have GERD. But he did have colic. I have three recommendations:

1. Gripe Water. I prefer the Baby's Bliss brand (however, after this course I will be able to make my own;) Gripe water is an herbal supplement that consists mainly of fennel and ginger. Both fennel and ginger aid in digestion. The two work synergisticly to calm and sooth the baby. My son (as well as other baby's that I have recommended it for) seem to find relief from Gripe Water within 20 minutes after taking it.

2. Lavender Oil. My son seemed to respond well when I used Lavender Oil. Sometimes I would put a drop on his clothing. Other times I put the Lavender Oil in a humidifier and I would lay my son nearby.

3. Swaddling Blankets. A general rule of thumb for all infants is that swaddling them will work wonders. However, if they are experiencing painful gas, tight swaddling might add to the anxiety. To determine if the baby is experiencing gas pains lay them on their back (unswaddled) and watch their legs for a few minutes. If the baby pulls up their legs at the same time they cry out (almost like doing a crunch or a sit up) then chances are they are experiencing gas pains. If this is the case, still swaddle the baby to help them feel the comfort and security, just don't wrap them as tight. You want them to be able to move their legs enough to be able to pull them up and relieve the gas if possible.

Global College of Natural Medicine: Holistic Health Practitioner

I have been deeply interested in holistic health for a few years. Up to this point in my life I have just studied and researched on my own. When I started having people come to me on a regular basis for health advise, I knew I needed to become certified and earn the proper credentials to advise anyone about their health.

I researched several Natural Medicine schools. I finally narrowed my search down to Global College of Natural Medicine. I am so glad that I chose this school! When I received my box of school supplies it felt like Christmas! My studies consist of herbalism, nutrition, alternative medicine, etc. So I have shelves full of great up to date books that cover the health of the body as a whole. The study modules that we follow are fantastic! And the Student Forum is a great resource and student connection! The Student Services department is extremely helpful and professional. I have never felt any regret about spending the money for the schooling.

When I decided to go to GCNM my finances didn't allow me to just up and pay for the whole course all in one lump sum. In fact, I didn't know how I was going to pay for it. Luckily I have a smart husband who helped me draw up a good plan. He suggested that I enroll in the local community college part time for a couple of general education classes (English 101 and Basic Computers) then I could use the financial aid that I accepted for the community college classes as well as the GCNM classes. This worked out perfectly. GCNM also allowed me to set up a payment plan that made it all possible.

As I have studied with Global College of Natural Medicine I have felt just like I am attending a regular university. They are very professional and the courses are very well put together. I know that I will finish this course feeling prepared for my future as a Holistic Health Practitioner.

I recommend Global College of Natural Medicine to anyone. Whether they are just looking to educate themselves in the holistic health lifestyle or if they are embarking on a lifestyle and career change, they will not be disappointed!
